Tallow vs plant oils: feel, stability and shelf life

Tallow vs plant oils: feel, stability and shelf life

How they feel on skin Oils don't truly "absorb" deep into skin. They sit in the outer layers, and how they feel depends on their fat profile. • Tallow is a soft solid that melts at skin temperature. It feels rich at first, then settles into a soft, protected finish. • Light oils like jojoba, grapeseed and rosehip feel thin and sink in fast, but offer less of a seal. • Shea and coconut sit in between. Shea is rich like tallow. Coconut feels lighter but can clog pores for some people. For very dry or windburnt skin, a heavier seal usually helps more. For oily skin, a lighter oil is often more comfortable. Stability: why some oils go off faster Fats go rancid through oxidation. The more polyunsaturated fat an oil has, the faster it oxidises. • Tallow is mostly saturated and monounsaturated fat, so it's naturally stable. • Rosehip, grapeseed and sunflower oils are high in polyunsaturated linoleic acid. They oxidise faster and often need antioxidants or refrigeration. • Coconut, shea and jojoba are also quite stable. Jojoba is technically a liquid wax, not an oil. Rancid oil smells off and can irritate skin, so stability matters more than most labels admit. Shelf life Stable fats make for a longer shelf life without preservatives. Our balms are best used within [X months] of opening. Keep the tin closed, out of direct sun and away from heat. If it ever smells sharp or crayon-like, replace it. Where plant oils win • Vegan and vegetarian customers need a plant option, full stop. • Acne-prone skin may prefer lighter, linoleic-rich oils, which some people find less congesting. • Very warm, humid days can make any rich balm feel heavy. Where tallow wins • A one-ingredient product. No blending, no preservatives, nothing to hide. • Fats familiar to skin. Its main fatty acids match the most common ones in human sebum. • Stability. It keeps well without additives. • A strong seal for dry, cracked or reactive skin. Quick answers Is tallow better than coconut oil? For many people with dry skin, yes, because it seals well and stays stable without additives. For vegans, coconut or shea is the alternative. Does tallow balm need refrigeration? No. Store it somewhere cool and dry.
