Halal, zabiha and tayyib: what each word promises in skincare

Halal: permitted Halal means permissible under Islamic law. For a skincare product, two questions matter most: • Is every animal-derived ingredient from a permitted animal, slaughtered correctly? Pork and its derivatives are never halal. • Is anything impure (najis) in the product or its processing? This covers cross-contamination from shared equipment, not just the ingredient list. Scholars differ on how strictly halal rules apply to products used on the skin rather than eaten. Many Muslims prefer halal skincare anyway, especially for anything used during wudu, on children, or near the mouth. Zabiha: how the animal was slaughtered Zabiha (also written dhabiha) refers to the method of slaughter: a swift cut to the throat by a Muslim, with the name of Allah invoked. For tallow, zabiha is the part of halal that can't be seen in the finished product. Only the supply chain can prove it. That's why a halal claim on an animal-based balm means little on its own. Ask where the fat came from, which abattoir processed it, and who certified it. Tayyib: good and wholesome Tayyib means good, pure or wholesome. The Quran pairs it with halal, telling people to consume what is "halal and tayyib" (Al-Baqarah 2:168). Halal sets the minimum. Tayyib asks whether something is actually good. In practice, tayyib covers things a certificate doesn't: how the animal was raised, what it was fed, and how cleanly the product is made. Grass-fed cattle, careful rendering and no unnecessary additives are tayyib choices. What to check before you buy 1. A named certifier. Look for the certifying body's name, not just a halal logo. 2. Named sourcing. The brand should tell you which farms or regions the tallow comes from. 3. A clean process. Ask whether equipment is shared with non-halal products. 4. A short ingredient list. Fewer ingredients means fewer things to check. How Talglow approaches it Our tallow comes from halal-certified abattoir in NSW. Each batch is triple-filtered and hand-poured in small batches in Berala, Sydney. We aim for both halal and tayyib, not just the label.
Quick answers Is tallow skincare halal? Only if the tallow comes from a halal animal slaughtered correctly, and nothing impure is added.
